From Wonder Woman to Superman! Clinician Imposter Syndrome

From Wonder Woman to Superman! Clinician Imposter Syndrome

Do you remember the day your first client walked into the room? Did you, like me, wonder who let you loose on these poor, unsuspecting people?! I felt like I didn’t know anything—or enough—and I couldn’t remember what I was supposed to do or say. Rarely have I been so nervous.

Sitting opposite a hurting soul and being expected to know how to help was terrifying. Gradually, I eased into the session, remembering that my presence, compassion, and ability to listen were the most important skills I brought into the room.

Fast forward 10 years, and now, instead of Imposter Syndrome, I feel like Wonder Woman in the therapy room! I can conquer any issue, help any client, and wrangle any unwanted emotion with my sexy gold rope!

No.
I cannot.
And neither can you.

But sometimes we feel responsible for healing everyone’s pain and being the answer to every client’s presenting problem.

Superwoman & Superman!
Batman & Robin!
Black Panther, Spiderman, and Wolverine all wrapped up in one clinician. Invincible. All-knowing. The Problem Solver! Full of ethics and continuing education trainings – we have it ALL together!

After years in this profession, we can overestimate our abilities and underestimate our needs, or stop listening to our inner voice that’s calling out.

We still need wins with clients.
We still need reassurance at times.
We still need self-care.
We still need rest and vacations—from clients, and sometimes from people altogether.

We can’t run into a phone booth or jump in the Batmobile to chase down every crisis and remain healthy ourselves.

So, this is a reminder to take off your superhero cape and remember: you’re not the healer—you’re the vessel. Spend time being poured into so you don’t run dry.

Ask for help.
Let others support YOU.
Be the answer, the light, the gift for yourself too.

Then you won’t be an imposter—you’ll be a real person. A healthy soul. An authentic human.
And yes—a hero.
